Episode 6 – Dating Stories Part II

unnamedThis is part two of the series.  At this point I’m not sure how many parts there will be because I have several more stories recorded to share.  I do know that there will be at least a part 3, though!

The first story is from Julie Hill about the first time she hung out with a gentleman that she’d heard so much about. (there was some build up). Julie also created the artwork for this week’s podcast, inspired by the 3rd story.  Check out her website!

Story 2 is told by Grace about the first time she met her own dude of the internet form a message board.  Don’t we know by now that that’s a bad idea?

The third story is told by Lisa Cantrell who is also the creator and host of the podcast An Inexact Science.

Finally, a gentleman friend tells the story of his most embarrassing first date.  He prefers to remain anonymous.

Episode 5 – Ghost Stories

This episode was supposed to be all ghost stories.  The problem is that I was trying to tell ghost stories with my drunk friends and it ended up being drunk girl talk with a couple ghost stories at the end.  I think we needed a little light hearted fun after a few heavy episodes though, right?  None of the gals in this weeks episode are credited because I don’t think anyone wants this silliness on their permanent record!

Episode 4 – Growing Up Online

788648283_52041507c6_oThis is part one of a 2 part series. That is the plan, lest there be even more dating stories that come my way in the next few weeks and it is expanded to a 3rd part. This story is from me, and it is is about dating digitally. I started chatting online when I was 10 years old, believe it or not. The dating- more like chatting with intention to meet- came around 13 or 14. To the left is a photo of me when I was about 17 or possibly just after my 18th birthday, taken with my webcam in my bedroom (stuffed animals, futon, and all).

This episode features music from my friends The Lions Rampant and Lisa Cantrell who is also the creator and host of the podcast An Inexact Science.

Tig Notaro Live Show in Columbus Last Night

Yesterday my pal Corrie and I drove a couple of hours to Columbus to see Tig Notaro preform again.

Neither of us had ever been to The Bluestone for any reason and we were both pretty blown away with how gorgeous and clean and well maintained the place was.  Hell, they even had a handsome 17 year old taking our $5 parking payment.  (ugh, I’m going to jail now I think).  Neither of us could think of anything in Cincinnati that compares, but was sort of like the former Southgate House (now the Thompson House) if it was super clean and thoughtfully renovated.  It was so pristine, from the white folding chairs to the glass surrounding the balcony.  No a single initial scratched in the glass.  What was it, magic glass?  Some respectful-ass Columbus residents?  With a good amount of traffic and some light snow/rain on the way in, we arrived only about 1/2 an hour before the show began.  I had really wanted to get up close like a proper creep, but we found that there were prime empty seats in the balcony.  Creeping from above is great too! Plus the balcony had its own bar with zero wait and $6 well cocktails. In all of the excitement and day long panic attack I literally didn’t remember to eat anything after like 1:00 pm yesterday.  So, cheap and short-lived drunk, basically.  It was already shaping up to be the perfect show.

This was our vantage point from the balcony.

There was a pretty large population of straights in the audience.  Because comedy transcends sexual orientation, you guys.

IMG_4636No one ever sat in the seats behind us, though most of the front row seats finally filled up right before show time.  Still, super intimate up there.

Tig’s set ended up being pretty much identical to the set she preformed just a few months ago in Cincinnati.  Which is, you know, totally expected.  But it was still completely hilarious and wonderful and I enjoyed every second of it.  After a few more months of practice, some of the stories were even richer in depth and detail and humorosity.  We laughed ’till we cried and heckled her only a little.

After the show I had every intention of saying hi to Tig’s face.  I found myself standing in line and sweating like a whore in church, despite the fact that Corrie  was wearing her winter coat (along with everyone else in line) and holding mine while little sweat droplets fell out of my sleeveless tank and I fluffed my hair nervously.  Tig was as gracious as always, taking her time to sign the poster that I bought.  She asked who to make it out to and I pointed to my name on my vest.  She asked “Is that it?” and I though for too long then asked if it would make me a jerk to ask her to correct a mistake she had made on my vest when she signed it last time.  I think I asked her if it would make me a jerk about 47 times.

“You, um, forgot to write the ‘is’? Oh God, I’m a jerk”

IMG_4643This actual face I was making conveys just how much of a jerk I felt like.

She was super nice about it and did not think that I was a jerk. Then promptly wrote on my poster. “Casey, you are a jerk.”  Which was the most perfect thing and that is when we became best friends and went out for drinks and texted all night about our lives and go to know each other and she invited me to Christmas with her and her fiancée.  Jk. That is when she invited me behind the counter and threw her arm around me and pointed at me saying “THIS GIRL IS A JERK” while Corrie continued over-documenting the event (lets be friends forever, Corrie).  I put my arm around her waist (yeah, you jelly) and could NOT hold it together enough to smize and turn up one corner of my mouth.  I’m full on guffawing in this picture. Best night.

IMG_4651

On the way home, Corrie and I had epic girl talks and the 2 hour drive back home was almost just as fun as the show we had just been to. So glad we didn’t miss it.

Tig is still has a ton of tour dates, I can’t recommend enough that you see her live in your town.  Her website is tignotaro.com.

I realize that this post is not exactly Brain Beans related, but I thought it would be a nice excuse to recap the show last night.  Since Tig was such a big inspiration for me starting my own podcast, it still seems fitting.  I’m working on a really great episode right now that’s almost finished.  I’m excited enough about this one that an early release is highly likely!

Episode 3- Soupruary

In this single story episode, contributor Corrie Loeffler and I rap about her yearly blog called Soupruary. This isn’t a story as much as it is just a chat between two gal pals (I really wish I could edit out more giggling. Wine was involved) for a story that I wrote for our local alt weekly last year.  The audio was just for my own notes for the article, but there were a lot of things that I couldn’t include in the original story that you’ll get to hear here.

Here is a link to Corrie’s blog and here you can read the original article on CityBeat’s website.

Episode 2 The Couch Surfer

Jon NicholasIn this single story episode, contributor Jon Nicholas tells the tail of a couch surfer he hosted and how he remained entangled in his life for the following 8 or so months. To the left is a photo of Jon. At this point, I urge you to just listen to the story if you haven’t done so yet! For those of you who have already heard the story, this photo shows him using the stolen laptop. Since this was the only such photo that we knew about, Jon didn’t even mind how pretty unflattering this picture is. He is definitely wearing Christmas stockings as socks.

Episode 1 Bonus Clip

Looking through some old home movies today I came across this one of a birthday party. I opened up a gift and popped up to show my mom that the mailing address for New Kids on the Block was on the back.  Immediately made me think of Episode 1. I guess I always wanted to meet my idols! I believe this video was taken on my 7th birthday.  Also, it was much easier for me to just take a quick phone video of my computer vs ripping the video from the dvd so the quality isn’t the best…but it wasn’t the best to begin with.

Single Story Short 1 Just Like Karl and Arthur

The Old SaloonThis story comes from your host, Casey Arnold.  I did have a cold when I recorded this episode, but really my voice in the intro sure sounds a lot worse than the rest of the episode, but I hope it’s not too distracting!

9 years ago I made a friend at a bar called The Old Saloon. I was a regular there for only about 4 months when it closed its doors and I lost touch with him. I chose this picture of the bar because it accurately describes the majority of my recollections of it. Blurry. Dark. Hard to remember.  I took it in August 2005.

I was reminded of that friend, “Karl”, last week when I was sorting through some of my old journal entries.  I decided to look him up on a whim and even though I only had a first name, “Karl” ended up being easier to track down than I thought he would be. But was I prepared for what I found?

Names in this story have been changed. I will be sure to record any updates to this story as they come along. Now that I’m keeping my eyes open, the likelihood of me running into Karl and Arthur seems like a pretty real possibility. No guarantees that I’ll be brave enough to say ‘hi’ or anything.

This episode features the song Churchbells by Lisa Cantrell.  You can listen to and download her music here and her podcast An Inexact Science can be found on iTunes. Under the ‘links’ tab you can find where to download the loops used in this episode and other sites with songs and loops available for download that are used on this podcast.

Episode 1 Heroes – Complete First Episode

The10394085_10152577698208172_439037419861783398_n last post contained a teaser for episode 1 where you heard the first story in its entirety.  In Chapter 1, I explore the topic of meeting your heroes and consider the advice that one should never meet their heroes or idols in a sort of audio essay.  To the left is a photo of myself meeting my hero, who I talk about in this episode, comedianne (isn’t that word classy?), Tig Notaro.  She hosts a podcast on the Earlwolf Network called Professor Blastoff  and has appeared on tv on programs such as The Sarah Silverman Program and various late night appearances including this set on Conan which is one of my favorites.

In the all new Chapter 2, contributor Lisa Witte talks about meeting her hero, Ryan Stiles.  Ryan is an improv actor best known for his work on the show Whose Line Is It Anyway? (Both British and American Versions). She muses on her feelings and admiration for Stiles and what the day was like for her. Lisa also compiled this Buzzfeed list A Compilation of Reasons to Love Ryan Stiles which she doesn’t mention on the podcast but is a little bonus for our readers. This photo that Lisa provided was from the first time she met Ryan.

Stick around at the end of this episode to hear Lisa and me chat more on the subject.
